About the ILS

The International Law Section of The Florida Bar (ILS) is a forum for the exchange of hot-button, need-to-know information and best practices that impact the practice of international law in Florida and around the world.

The ILS was founded in 1981 to provide an opportunity for its members with an interest in the field of international law to network and share information. It has become a state-wide forum for the sharing of knowledge, experience, and “know-how” to improve the administration and application of Florida law with respect to international law and current issues. The ILS has contributed significantly to the development of Florida’s statutes, rules, and regulations addressing international law and practice and has enhanced the proficiency of Florida’s practitioners.

The term “international law” includes both foreign and comparative law. It is defined as the practice of law dealing with issues, problems, or disputes arising from aspects of the relations between or among states and international organizations, between or among nationals of different countries, or between a state and a national of another state, including transnational business transactions, multinational taxation, customs, and trade. The ILS is a community whose members interact in one or more ways with such international law.
