ILS Chair’s News & Notes
Dear ILS Members,
I wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’ Day an official holiday in the U.S. Anna Jarvis was the main proponent for the creation of and observance of Mother’s Day in the U.S., but later became so disgusted by the commercialization of the holiday, she spent the rest of her life trying to abolish it. I am guessing that Ms. Jarvis did not care for Mother’s Day cards, flowers and brunch. Here is a photo of Ms. Jarvis:
Often when one thinks of mothers, they also think of mothers-in-law. Here, I ask us to reflect, instead of on mothers-in-law, on the Rule of Law, and the attacks upon it on a global basis. The Rule of Law, and lawyers defending it, are on the defensive in the U.S., Mexico, Turkey and Hong Kong, among other places. In the UK, the prime minister recently referred to human rights lawyers as “lefty lawyers”. When I refer to the Rule of Law, I do not refer to law in the form of executive edicts or fiat; I refer to due process of the law, the right to be heard in court by impartial judges and fact finders, without political influence or purpose, the use of long accepted legal processes, which inspire confidence and credibility, and the universal pursuit of justice. These concepts, in many parts of the world in the 21st Century, are on the run in favor of authoritarian methods and views. Lawyers, and lawyers’ associations which collaborate with each other, must do what we can to stem the tide. The challenge is in front of us.
On a lighter note, on May 13 the Miami International Arbitration Society is featuring a webinar on “The Human Memory and How to Address It in Arbitration”, featuring Adolfo Jimenez of ILS Hemispheric Sponsor Holland & Knight, and Jose Astigarraga of ILS Regional Sponsor Reed Smith. See how practices in international arbitration can affect memory, and witness testimony. Registration info is below.
In our Member News this week, we are pleased to feature ILS Executive Council member Laura Reich of ILS Hemispheric Sponsor ReichRodriguez with her announcement of being appointed to serve as an arbitrator on the Court of Arbitration of Art (CAfA). Also, in furtherance of the ILS’ strong encouragement and support of Florida Bar Board Certification, we feature ILS Executive Council member Kristin Drektrah-Paz, of ILS Global Sponsor Shutts & Bowen, who was appointed to the International Litigation & Arbitration Certification Committee of The Florida Bar. Kudos to both Laura and Kristin!
The ILS annual meeting will be held live on June 26, 2021, and will include our annual Executive Council meeting, elections, and committee meetings. Stay tuned shortly for more notices and news regarding location and registration.
Happy Mother’s Day!
