ILS Chair’s News & Notes

Dear ILS Members,
We once again arrive to the day before the weekend, which we all know as Gazette. Interestingly in Britain, gazette is also a verb. So for instance to announce something in a publication would be to “gazette” it. Or you may engage in “gazetting” or if you already announced something in the publication it was “gazetted”. Here at ILS, it also means “Friday”.
Yesterday, the ILS had its mid-year Executive Council meeting, which was held outdoors live at Jungle Island, and also via Zoom. Following the meeting was a cocktail reception, once again outdoors, at Jungle Island, with a great spread and of course, cocktails. It was good to see all those who attended live and to interact and network with each other, of course with masks and social distancing. Those who attended live received our ILS masks, ILS hand sanitizer, and a hard copy of our new ILQ, Winter 2021 issue focusing on Digital Law. It was also good to see all those who attended the meeting via Zoom, including a large number of past chairs of our Section, who remain ex-officio voting members of the Executive Council. During the meeting, the Council approved a collaborative agreement with the Quebec Bar Association. We also heard our committee reports, outlining the good work being done by ILS members despite the challenges of the pandemic, which hopefully, with increasing vaccinations, will soon become, not a pandemic, but just a very bad memory. It was clear from President Biden’s speech last night, that accomplishing that is his administration’s first and primary goal. Let’s all hope that goal is accomplished.
The Section thanks those sponsors who have committed to the renewal of their sponsorships for 2021. Those firms include Shutts, Sequor Law, Becerra Law, P.A., Osorio Internacional, Geoffrey M. Wayne, P.A., Reich Rodriguez, P.A., Hogan Lovells, Harper Meyer, Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A., Rifkin & Fox-Isicoff, P.A., JAMS, Holland & Knight and MDO Partners. Without the monetary support of our sponsors, this Section and its works would cease to exist. If you or your firm are involved in international legal practice in Florida, you need to be an ILS sponsor. Contact Treasurer Jacqueline Villalba at or Vice-Treasurer Richard Montes de Oca at for sponsorship information.
Continue sending us your webinar ideas and proposals, short articles and member news for your Gazette. We want to feature the talents and accomplishments of our ILS members. Also, please consider submitting an article for publication in the International Law Quarterly, known as the ILQ, the finest section magazine in the land. The next issue will focus on “Shifts in International Law and Principles Under the Biden Administration”. The ILQ also has great advertising opportunities.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely yours,
Robert J. Becerra
