The Florida Bar International Law Section invites all its Members to attend the Annual Meeting of the American Bar Association, Section of International Law taking place virtually on April 14-16, 2021.

The annual meeting is the central point of the Section year, where the ABA ILS members, committees, and Section leaders gather with each other, leaders of other bar associations, and the international legal community. Although the event will be gathering virtually, this year will be no different. The ABA International Law Section will join a worldwide audience to hear leaders in international law from former Legal Advisers to the United States, to a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a former Prime Minister of Canada, and to General Counsel for the World Bank.

Panels of leading experts will address cutting edge issues and emerging conditions that drive cross border work, including , deals and the risks presented in our current environment, litigation, technology, trade, national security, human rightsand the rule of law – all with a focus on the Americas . The world has been dealing with extraordinary times and the Annual Meeting promises extraordinary programs that reflect our times.

Please join the International Law Section on April 20th, 2021 at 1:00 PM for a virtual Lunch & Learn presentation with Richard C. Lorenzo, Regional Managing Partner for the American at Hogan Lovells, and hosted by ILS Immediate Past Chair, Clarissa Rodriguez.

Richard focuses on international commercial litigation and arbitration for foreign and domestic clients with interests throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe, Using creative and nuanced strategies, Richard resolves his clients’ complex cross-border disputes which are often precedent-setting. Whether it’s a dispute in English or Spanish, or before any of the most important tribunals or institutions – including the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), and others – Richard effectively analyzes the matter and collaborates with clients to implement a winning strategy. Time spent living in Latin America attuned Richard to the civil law system and political landscape of Spanish-speaking jurisdictions, which complements his English-language arbitration practices.

Richard is actively involved in academia. He extensively lectures in his practice area and is an adjunct professor of International Arbitration and Litigation at Florida International University College of Law. Richard also maintains a national and international media presence on topical international legal issues, and has appeared on CNN En Espanol and served as a guest commentator on Bloomberg Radio.

The Florida Bar International Law Section encourages its members to join the Miami International Arbitration Society and the University of Miami School of Law on April 21 at 8:00 p.m. EST (April 22 at 12:00 JST) for the Webinar, “International Arbitration in the U.S. and the Americas,” the first segment of a two-part webinar series on international arbitration focused on Japan, the U.S. and the Americas. The Webinar, co-sponsored by the Japan International Dispute Resolution Center (JIDRC) and the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (“JCAA”) will feature Matthew N. Drossos, Sandra Friedich, Daniel E. Gonzalez, Naoki Kanayama, Katharine Menendez de la Cuesta, and Richard L. Williamson, Jr. During this first segment, the panel of international arbitration specialists will provide an overview on the U.S. legal system and the legal framework for international arbitration in the U.S. and the Americas. Please join the Florida Bar International Law Section for its webinar, “PPE Transactions in a Pandemic: Achieving Compliance and Identifying Fraud,” on Thursday, April 22, 2021, starting at 12:00 PM Eastern. The Webinar, featuring an incredible group of panelists, including ILS heavy-weights Robert Becerra (ILS Chair), James Meyer (ILS Chair-Elect), and Peter Quinter (ILS Past-Chair), will discuss the pandemic phenomena of fraud in the purchase, sale, and distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (“PPE”), which has become a multi-billion dollar market during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Among the topics that will be discussed are the potential dangers from quality problems to fraud involved in engaging in the PPE market and due diligence to reduce those risks; the issues involving customs and trade authorities in both the countries of export and import, including both Customs and Border Protection and the Food & Drug Administration, which may ruin what otherwise would be a profitable transaction; and the proper contracting principles to avoid fraud and compliance issues. The International Law Section is proud to announce that it has joined as a Community Supporter of the upcoming panel on Combating Hate, Racism, and Xenophobia Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, hosted by the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) of South Florida, APABA of Tampa Bay, the Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association, and the Jacksonville Asian American Bar Association. The panel discussion will take place on 28 April 2021 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
