Please join the International Law Section on Wednesday, May 13th for a virtual presentation with Effie D. Silva, Esq., FCIArb, a Florida Bar attorney, corporate legal counsel, and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Silva is a graduate from Wellesley College and the University of Florida Levin College of Law, and currently serves as the Group Ethics and Compliance Director for Protein NA and Salt for Cargill, Inc., a global food and agricultural company. In that capacity, Effie is an independent, objective, and strategic ethics and compliance advisor on behalf of the company’s business groups and as a fiduciary to the audit committee of the Board.

Prior to Cargill, Effie served as Vice-President and Associate General Counsel of Tyson Foods, Inc., an international food company, where she led the Prepared Foods and Sustainability business units, providing strategic legal guidance on commercial business agreements, M&A, marketing and intellectual property matters, dispute resolution proceedings and data privacy/cyberbreach matters. Before moving in-house, Effie was a Partner at both McDermott, Will & Emery and Duane Morris and a senior lawyer at Baker & McKenzie, representing clients in commercial business matters, regulatory investigations and international litigation and arbitration disputes.

The International Law Section invites all its members to join the International Bar Association for its 15th Anniversary Bar Leaders’ Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. The event, including the sessions, will be dedicated to the history of the previous Bar Leaders’ Conference while looking at the future of the legal profession. The planned sessions include: (i) Independence of the legal profession and Bar Association – positive and negative trends in the regulation 2006-2020; (ii) The Bar Associations as guardians of the Rule of Law – old and new challenges 2006-2020; (iii) Core values and lawyers’ ethical rules – old and new challenges 2006-2020; (iv) Role of the Bar Association in training – have lawyers become better trained?; and (v) Bar Associations in crisis situations – experiences and lessons to learn 2006-2020. A special Gala Dinner will be held at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and on May 19, the Lithuanian Bar Association, host of the IBA Conference, will organize an international conference titled “Ensuring Client Privilege: Recent Challenges,” which all attendees of the 15th Anniversary Bar Leaders’ Conference are invited to attend. The Florida Bar Certification Exams originally scheduled for May 7-8, 2020, have been rescheduled to September 10-11, 2020, at the Hilton Airport Westshore in Tampa, Florida.
