ILS Chair’s News & Notes

Dear ILS Members,

Another week draws to a close; another Gazette to read and ponder.

This week we witnessed the peaceful inauguration of a new U.S. President (although an old familiar face). With a new administration, comes new regulations, new trade policies, new treaties, new laws, new executive orders, new initiatives, which all portends—lots of new business for international lawyers! The ILS wishes the new administration the best of luck and wisdom in its future endeavors, especially with the fight against the pandemic, the solution to which would remedy so many of the world’s current problems, and increase international cooperation, relations and business.

In this issue of the Gazette, we continue to feature Florida Bar Board Certified Lawyers. This time, we feature long time ILS member Sam Mandelbaum from Tampa, a litigator, mediator and proctor-in-admiralty for the U.S. Maritime Association. Sam states that the best advice for preparing for the certification exam is to “study hard”, and he’s right; that is why the ILS International Law Deskbook is a publication every international lawyer should have in his/her shelf. A great study tool, and a great reference guide. Near the bottom of the Gazette you will find links on how to get your copy.

This Gazette also features another podcast from ILS Regional Sponsor Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg on Customs and Border Protections new five year strategic plan and what it means for international trade. Click on the link to give a listen.

Also of great interest to many will be ILS Vice Treasurer Richard Montes de Oca’s article, along with Claudia Herbello of his firm, ILS Regional Sponsor MDO Partners, article on the second round of PPP Loans with answers to some important questions for potential applicants.

Please check out our upcoming programming, including ILS Regional Sponsor JAMS’ participation in a webinar entitled “The Time for Collaborative ADR in Latin America is Now” being held on February 9th, and our webinar on February 17 on H-1B Visas.

The Gazette is always looking for news from our members on their advancements or achievements and for content from our Sponsors, such as short articles, podcasts and the like. Have something to say? Send it to Davide Macelloni at

Until next time!

Sincerely yours,

Robert J. Becerra
