ILS Chair’s News & Notes

Dear ILS Members,
It’s Friday, and time for our Labor Day edition of the Gazette.
As we head into Labor Day weekend, we should reflect on what it means besides having barbecues, sitting at a pool or beach, or otherwise getting Monday off at work. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Some say the first Labor Day parade was held in New York City in September 1882. It was later made a federal holiday by President Grover Cleveland, the only president to serve two terms while taking off 4 years between his terms. I suppose he had a “labor term” instead of a labor “day.” For many, it also symbolized the end of Summer, although in Florida, our hot summer often will last through Halloween. In any event, this Labor day, as we see the difficult challenges the American worker, and all workers in the world, must endure due to the pandemic, with layoffs or working conditions that risk exposure, let’s remind ourselves of the good labor performed by all those who provide us with goods and services. Let’s all keep in mind recent government initiatives that prohibit the import of products into the U.S. manufactured with child labor, or the slave labor still going on in many parts of the world. Importantly, let’s keep in mind, in the words of the U.S. Department of Labor, that “the vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideas of economic and political democracy.”
Turning to this Gazette, we bring news that Past ILS Chair Peter Quinter will be a panelist in a webinar on trade disputes on the Transatlantic trade on steel, bags and wine, presented by the European-American Chamber of Commerce on September 16th. Our law school liaison committee is recruiting new members. Please contact Professor Manuel Gomez and get involved! Cristina Vicens-Beard, Executive Council member, was a panelist at the 58th Annual AIJA Congress, and Robert Santos has joined ILS Regional Sponsor Geoffrey M. Wayne, P.A. as of counsel. Keep your articles and member news coming in for the Gazette.
Have a great Labor Day weekend.
Sincerely yours,
Robert J. Becerra
