Section Immediate Past Chair C. Ryan Reetz and Pedro J. Martinez-Fraga, both of Bryan Cave LLP in Miami, have authored Public Purpose in International Law: Rethinking Regulatory Sovereignty in the Global Era, published this month by Cambridge University Press. The book examines the origins and historical development of the public purpose doctrine, drawing examples from developments in trade and investment treaties, customary international law, investor-state arbitration awards, foreign investment protection statutes, and other sources of international legal norms, and offers 11 specific propositions for further development of the doctrine.
